George T. Howarth passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026. In his final hours, he expressed love and concern for the needs of others rather than himself. He encouraged laughter over tears.
He is survived by his daughter Janeen Howarth (Sean Noblett), girlfriend Joy Clifford, nephews David and Donald, and niece Lisa. He is also survived by cherished lifelong friends Karl and Janice and by his ex-wife Yolanda. He is predeceased by his wife Susan.
For thirty years, George was a special education teacher for Connetquot Central School District. He had a passion for small engines (especially that of his 1975 MGB and assortment of garden tractors), greatly enjoyed electrical work, and was up for the challenge of nearly any do-it-yourself project. George was a regular practitioner of yoga and an avid gardener with a fondness for jellybean tomatoes and pickling cucumbers. He also raised chickens for many years and had a great appreciation for science, the natural world, and a good flannel shirt.
George was generous and compassionate and never hesitated to offer a kind word or a helping hand. As we mourn his loss, we are grateful for his life. We ask that any who wish to honor his memory, do so by reflecting upon what brings them joy. Hold George near to that joy in your heart while offering kindness when it is least expected. It is through connection that we truly live.
Beyond this, no gifts are requested or expected. However, if you do wish to make a more tangible gesture, in lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to CurePSP (at psp.org), or The National Park Foundation, or The Nature Conservancy, or by planting a tree through the McManus-Lorey website (or by any other method you may choose).
George will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery with his late wife Susan who was a veteran of the United States Navy.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 19, 2026 from 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM at the McManus-Lorey Funeral Home 2084 Horseblock Rd. Medford, NY 11763.
