Obituary of John Edward Maier

John E. Maier, Jr., 88, of Peshtigo, Wis. passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. He was born on November 3, 1923 to the late John and Maud (Fuller) Maier, Sr. in New York, NY. John proudly served his country in the United States Navy from November 25, 1942 until January 6, 1946, while he was in the Navy he served under General MacArthur as his Radio Man on the USS Boise. He also participated in Operation Rsecue after the war was declared over. On March 28, 1980 John married the love of his life June Cairns in New York City. John was a member of The First United Methodist Church in Menominee, Mich. and the Lions Club, he was also an avid bird watcher, gardener and he enjoyed fishing and watching the Yankees.
John is survived by his loving wife, June of 32 years; three daughters, Kathleen (Tom) Rodkey, Ann Marie (Mark) Wynn and Meledi (Patricia) Maier; three sons John (Michele) Maier III, Stephen (Lisa) Maier and Gary (Jenny) Maier; four step-daughters, Judi (Doug) Stevenson, Linda Traut, Lori (Tony) Balleta and Connie (Dan) Lamont; two sisters, Adele Murphy and Barbara (Milton) Wolf and two brothers, Raymond (Phyllis) Maier and Robert (Catherine) Maier; 34 grandchildren; and 27 great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents; his late wife, Anne Molloy Maier; two daughters, Bernadette Maier Morin and Colleen Maier McKinney; two sons, Kenneth Maier, and Michael Maier; one step-daughter Vicki Lynn Nikolaus and one sister Dorothy Duhaime.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 from 10am to 1pm at the McManus-Lorey Funeral Home, 2084 Horse Block Road, Medford. Funeral service will be at 1PM at the funeral home. Interment with honors to follow at Long Island National Cemetery. In leiu of flowers John’s family requests donations in his memory to St. Jude’s Chilrens Research Hospital.
