Aune Phyl
.
The world is a poorer, less vibrant, and sadder place without Aune Phyl. It is hard to put
into words just what she, and her Gossin clan, did for us Donovans – there was so much that
I can’t possibly do it all jusce. The Gossins were fun, and New York and Long Island were
alive. We couldn’t believe that there was so much space; an outdoor life without rain;
proper sunshine and warmth; sandy beaches with huge waves; clams with hot sauce;
massive noisy cars; so much food; plenty of watery beer, and even microwaved bacon for
breakfast.
Aune Phyl was, most de*nitely, the boss in John Drive. A strong mother and wife, and a
supremely hospitable hostess full of life. She was resilient; welcoming; very proud of her
Irish heritage; a strong Catholic, and unfailingly generous. Family was the essence of Aune
Phyl - she had it all, and she clearly enjoyed it.
I feel lucky that I experienced even a small part of her life and close neighbourhood in
Farmingville. I will never forget her warmth, her mischievous laugh and smile, and her deep
devoon to her whole family. She adored my Dad, her brother Bernard, and always wore
her heart on her sleeve about her love and a2econ for all of her Donovan nieces and
nephews. As I became older, I developed more and more respect and admiraon for Aune
Phyl, especially for her faith and resolute posive spirit in dealing with her ill health, even
though she never paid the invoices for my medical advice! More recently, along with my
wife Ruth, we have had some wonderful mes with Phyl, Mark, Steph, and their beauful
daughter Helena. I know that we will have many more.
There have been moments of deep sadness, like today, but also many, many more mes of
happiness with Phyl and her family. Overwhelmingly, it is those memories that will live on
inside of me, and they are testament to the posivity that Aune Phyl brought to my life.
So, rest easy Aune Phyl. I hope that you are happily reunited with Denise, and that Jim is
asking for another beer! Thank you for being the force of nature that you were, and for all
of the love, generosity, and fun that you brought into our lives.

Dearest Aunty Phyllis, you were the best Aunt anyone could ask for! I have so many fond memories from my child and teenage years. You were so welcoming and kind to me, even when I once stayed with you for 8 weeks! I’ll never forget your great humour, patience and wisdom. I’ll also never forget the massive sandwiches you introduced us to, fetching beers constantly for Uncle Jim and your endless defence of the democrats :-)
I also remember some more difficult times and the grace and resilience you showed during those moments. I love you for who you are (I can’t seem to say it in the past tense) and how you accepted us all as individuals and as your own. Thank you for everything and say hi to Uncle Jim, you’ll find him by the record player singing along to Carousel xx

My dear sister Phylis
Although it was expected, Phyl’s death came as a shock.
I’ll miss our regular phone calls, keeping each other up to date on family matters.
Visits were becoming difficult due to age. Once we reached the age of reason we never had a harsh word or argument. How nice it would be if everyone could say the same!
When Phyl emigrated I didn’t expect to see her again. Fortunately travel between the UK and the USA became increasingly easier. Thus we were able to meet either in the USA or UK every few years. Our children became friends and visited regularly. Auntie Phyl was much loved by them all. Indeed , ever indomitable, she was intending to come to my eldest grandson Daniel’s, xwedding in October. Not to be!
I could go on writing about the happy times we had for a very long time but I’ll finish with an Irish blessing that Phyl liked:
May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

When I think of Aunty Phyllis I think of warmth and love, generosity and kindness, friends and family.
A kindred spirits in many ways, especially in our mutual disgust of anything remotely fatty attached to a piece of meat! This trait had me likened to Aunty Phyllis by Dad from a very early age. I loved and adored this lady, the one that would disect her meat just like I did.
In the early years, I remember Aunty Phyllis was the kindest lady and even though the miles kept us apart from each other, she was always on the end of the telephone line waiting to be connected at 6.30 on a Sunday evening. She also sent the four of us the most eagerly anticipated Christmas parcels filled with toys and American candy. To hear those words from Dad " a parcel from America arrived today" was the most wonderful and exciting thing as a child, and a memory that me and my siblings will always treasure.
With increased travel and technological advancements, the past few years have thankfully blessed us with many more opportunities to spend precious time with the gorgeous Gossin family, both in Long island and London.
In 2016 we had a family trip to Long Island and took Dad. Aunty Phyllis was an integral part of all the adventures we had and we made some truly special memories together. My favourite memory from that trip was two non swimmers in their 80's braving the pool! To witness first the trepidation, then the joy was just wonderful and thankfully the moment was captured on camera for ever. Over the years we have also enjoy fun events at her church and lovely evenings with her wonderful friends and neighbors.
We have shared some very special times here in the UK too, thankfully up to the start of the Pandemic, where Aunty Phyl then navigated zoom meets!
Aunty Phyll you were an absolute treasure, a blessing and the best aunty and friend - a wonderful lady that we were all lucky enough to have in our lives for 89 years. I am truly thankful that you became such good friends with Andrew and our children who all held you in the highest esteem and loved you dearly.
Memories are precious.
Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal.
Love leaves memories that no one can steal.
Rest in eternal peace beautiful lady, with your darling Jim and Denise, we will miss you forever. We may have lost a beautiful soul on this earth, but we have gained the most amazing guardian angel.

Aunty Phyl, this poem very much reminds me of you and reflects how I felt about you on many an occasion.
One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."
He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
